We can answer any question we have, like how do actors make themselves cry, so we never sit in wonder and wonder at the wonder of the world, anymore.
And anything we watch can be paused, so we never argue about what just happened while we were talking, anymore.
We cannot hope that we might have just missed their call, because our phones are always with us and if they didn't call, they didn't call.
No protests in the streets, just a button marked 'like'.
No one reads stories aloud, unless you are a child.
No letters. Just bills.
Loved this. And even more, I love that the comments are back.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
im not going to lie...I'm not really a fan of this..it's not really deep and thought provoking like usual. It's just sort of mlah.

ReplyDeleteThey always speak to me in some way or another.
We keep thinking we're making it better.. but what are we really doing? I love getting a letter in the mail.
ReplyDeleteEnlightening and tragic portrait you have painted here, but beautiful as always. I wish you weren't, but you're right. I wish things were how they used to be. Actually, I just wish they were different. (I don't know if they were any better before.)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I've rambled a bit. On a side note, I hope you are well. I know I'm just a faceless, nameless reader amongst your masses of followers... but I want you to know that your words, your insights, mean more than I'm sure you could understand.

I'm 24. I read stories out loud. With newspaper articles I pretend I'm a newscaster (long-abandoned dream career); with storybooks I pretend I'm a raconteur. For a while I get to be someone I could never be. It's cool.

This is so right.
ReplyDeleteAnd it makes my heart hurt a little bit.
and once we could speak our minds, then we lost our voices. Which is much better than losing your mind and speaking our voices.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, I know.
tell me, please, that you created this beautiful thing in the hope that one particular person would find it, not just for us all?
ReplyDeleteMany of those changes, can't just be "liked." Many of those changes, aren't a change for the better.

ReplyDeleteAll these convenient time-savers have stolen our time to 'Be."
ReplyDelete"We cannot hope that we might have just missed their call, because our phones are always with us and if they didn't call, they didn't call."
ReplyDeleteSo simple, straightforward, and painful. Reaches into the depth of human emotion and feeling, and pulls out just the words needed to convey.
So true :(
